Doubles Facts

In math we are working on our doubles addition facts! Today we illustrated and shared the pages in our Doubles Class Book. We worked in pairs to create an illustration to go with the 'fact rhyme.'  Here is what we came up with! Enjoy!!!

What is an American Citizen?

In our study of American citizens we learned that America is called the 'Melting Pot' because people emigrated here from all over the world.  Our discussion led us to the fact that Americans are all different. I had two students "Define" an American citizen and here is what they had to say!

american citizens are all  diffrent.
we live in diffrint homes.
we eat diffrent food.
we have diffrent hair.
we have diffrent close.
we have diffrent bookbag.
we have diffrent dogs.
people are diffrent colors.
some people are brown and peach.
Our Blogger hard at work typing up his definition!

Voting

Today we made the ultimate decision- Skittles or Starbursts! I know, I know- it was tough! In our voting activity we made a choice between the two candies. Majority rules, and Skittles won!  We then had to vote on what to do with the bag of Starbursts. After a class discussion, we decided to give them to another 2nd grade classroom. With another vote in order, Mrs. L's class won! We presented them with their bag of candy and came back to class to review the rules of voting. Below are rules brought to you by MB and KC- in their own words!

Rules of Voting
you  have to be a good citesen.
you dont tell your friends who to vote for.
you  dont always win.
 you vote on a ballot.

Starburst!

Skittles please!

Skittles again!!

That's another vote for Skittles!

Typing up the rules- after a rough draft

Finishing touches on the blog!

History Vocabulary

In history we are working on understanding citizenship. This unit has some pretty heavy vocabulary. To help us learn the words, we made vocabulary posters in groups of 3 today. Here are what some of our "P People" have to say about the terms- citizenship, trustworthiness, respect, honesty, self-discipline, self-reliance, responsibility.

Trustworthiness

Self-Discipline

Respect

Self-Reliance

Math Notebooks

In math today we worked in our interactive notebooks. We made addition 'flip ups.' Addition problems were written on the outside of each flap, students solved the problems and wrote the answer underneath. We will use these to practice for the rest of the year!

"In the picture I write the answer 12."

Our "Blogger" hard at work posting his sentence.

What's in store for week 2!

Welcome to week 2 of school! Now that we have gotten our introductions out of the way, practiced our rules, and solidified our routine it is time to get more in depth into the curriculum. Here's a glimpse of what's in store for the "P People" this week.

History-
We will do class voting to simulate decision making at a government level, and discuss how people are voted into office.
We continue to demonstrate good citizenship at school by taking care of our school building and peers.

Math-
Addition and subtraction rule our math lessons this week. We will begin looking at fact families, continue to play addition and subtraction "games," and dive into story problems!

Reading-
We will continue our classroom reading group roations each day- warming our brains up with wordstudy, writing, guided reading, and independent reading time.

Writing-
This week we begin our new writing program Teach Me Writing.  We will write about family activities.

This week is sure to be a productive, engaging time in our room!

We invite you to check back to see what we've shared!

Happy Monday,

-Mrs. P's Second Grade

First Week Jitters!

Dear Readers,
Did you know that a teacher has trouble falling asleep, the night before school starts? True story!  Just like a student feels excitement, walking up to class that very first time, a teacher anticipates what the year holds in store.  So many questions, to do lists, and supplies to sort out- before even getting to know everyone's first name.  This year in 2nd grade, I was lucky enough to move up with last years group of FABULOUS first graders, into SPECTACULAR second graders.  Even with familiar faces, we created a new bunch- as we welcomed new friends to school.  We have accomplished so much in 5 short days- just look at our math, history, and writing journals.  As the first week of school winds down, I have come to realize a few very important things about the class- I must say they are a marvelous class.

We  are a unique group of individuals who care about one another, and show compassion in many ways!
We are excellent readers!
We can solve addition problems using number lines, counters, and we are good at it too!
Standing in line and walking through the hallway is one of our collective strengths!
We will work for suckers and stickers!

This year will be an excellent year of learning for everyone, and I invite you to join us on our journey! Through our blog, we hope to highlight achievement and hardwork- and share it with the world. After all, we are here to change it!
