November

Happy November! We have gotten in the swing of our new space so quickly. Currently we are working on shapes, solids, and symmetry.  We are getting ready to jump right back into the review of place value and comparing numbers.
In history we are a week into our Native American unit. Check out the pictures of us writing on "Buffalo skin" like the Lakota Indians, of the Great Plains.

October News

Welcome to October. We are working on simple addition and subtraction facts. Please practice these at home- making flashcards is a great way to help your child remember them. We also have reading groups rolling! We have seen great growth and progress in these last couple of weeks.  In science we are in the middle of a weather unit. Please help your child by holding conversations about the characteristics of the day's weather. What types of activities can you do in weather like today? What should we wear?  Most importantly, what do you predict the weather will be like tomorrow?  In light of recent events, please make sure your child is dressed for the day's weather when they come to school.

Please continue to send in homework on Monday's. There is no homework grade, however I am keeping record of completion.  Homework is an excellent way to teach your child to carve out special time at home to rethink the day's lessons. It is important to begin working on home study skills early, to instill good practice for later in their education.

I look forward to seeing everyone at back to school night in the upcoming week.

Welcome Back Students!

Welcome back kiddos and parents. I am beyond excited to meet each of you at back to school night, or on the 1st day of school.  As the first day of school approaches please start to get into your new routine.  I know I have to make myself get up extra early, and eat a big breakfast! Below is a list of ideas to consider to help make the transition into a new school year a bit easier for you and your child.

* Start getting to bed a bit earlier, and thus wake up a bit earlier too!

* Prepare for the next day before hitting the sack! Did you pick out your clothes? Pack your lunch and snack?

*Homework will not be coming home for a few weeks, but set aside 20 minutes each night to read. This will help prepare everyone for the nights when you will have to sit down and do homework.

*Have multiple chats about how your child will get to and from school each day, especially the first day. This can cause anxiety in children.  If they worry about forgetting, send in a note to help them remember.

*Ask your child what their favorite part of 1st grade was, or flip through a yearbook remembering old friends. Reflecting on the fun they had last year will help get them excited for what's in store this year!

I look forward to meeting everyone soon! Feel free to email me with questions or concerns at secondgradesnapshot@gmail.com  or my school email, listed on the school website.

All information regarding location of our school and county is to be kept personal on the blog, for the safety of students and teachers!

February

With Valentine's Day quickly approaching, if feels like Winter Break was just a few days ago. I guess with the snow, we didn't have a chance to get quite back into our routine until last week. I hope everyone is working on their homework.  I am pleased to say we have our very own student teacher. We are all her Guinea pigs, and she is doing a great job working with the students each day. Ms. P2 is here for a few more weeks! I will post next week's homework, and send home the schedule for upcoming Parent Teacher Conferences tomorrow!
